Abstract

Costly certified and commercial reference materials can often not be applied for waste testing because of high test portion quantities needed and poor availability of suitable commercial soil and waste materials. The utilisation of a laboratory reference material can be regarded as a practical tool in the quality control of leaching test performance. A reference material is defined to be an homogenous material with measurable properties that are sufficiently well known for calibration of apparatus and measurements methods. The laboratory reference material is produced on site in certain laboratory by using a developed production scheme. The selection of possible reference material is based on previous experience in typical material properties. After production the ready laboratory reference material is utilised for variation checking of leaching test performance at regular intervals. The general requirements for reference materials together with examples of production procedures and critical aspects for the choice of the reference material are outlined in this report. The work included the production of a laboratory reference material and the homogeneity and stability testing procedures with respect to the leaching properties. Furthermore a round robin testing of the produced laboratory reference material was arranged with four participating Nordic laboratories. Based on results recommendations on the production and use of the laboratory reference material with known key parameters are given in the report.
