Abstract

These recommendations cover sampling of solid residues, such as ashes, slags and like residues, based on classical statistics. The basic principles are probabilistic sampling, i.e. every particle should have an equal chance of being included in a sample, and random sampling, i.e. samples should be collected randomly following a detailed sampling plan which has been compiled and agreed upon by all parties involved prior to initiation of sampling. These recommendations cover the sampling operation itself, i.e. sampling technique and sampling strategy. Some general advice concerning the choice of sample containers is also included. Sample treatment, with the exception of the combination of primary samples into composite samples or sample preparation for analysis, is not covered at all.
